Morgan's Bibles: Splendor in Scripture Exhibition Highlights Diversity and Devotion

Read: 2180

The Bible has served as a source of religious devotion, artistic inspiration, and literary impact throughout Western civilization. Few works have been as vividly reflective of the power embodied in print as scripturea testament to fth, an object of reverence, and a fundamental shaping force on linguistic and cultural developments. For J. Pierpont Morgan 1837-1913, collecting Bibles was not only an expression of his religious convictions but also a foray into his interests in archaeology, illuminated manuscripts, decorative arts, drawings, and early printed books. Morgan prized magnificence across all forms of artistic expressions, and this exhibition presents masterpieces that range from clay to papyrus, parchment, embroidery, champleve enamel, repousse gold, carved ivory, and molica, among others.

The exhibition Morgan’s Bibles: Splendor in Scripture showcases the diverse ways in which biblical texts have been enclosed within luxurious items for the enhancement of liturgy and ritual practices, as well as their dissemination through cheaply produced editions meant for widespread consumption. Through these collections, we can discern the varied interpretive intentions behind religious and state doctrines, often involving life-altering decisions during debates about scriptural authority. Whether intended for public display or personal devotion, each book and artwork serves as a treasure of spirit that attests to the imagination's power, convictions' strength, quest for meaning, and capacity for wonder.

Morgan’s Bibles: Splendor in Scripture is made possible by generous contributions from the Johansson Family Foundation, the Lucy Ricciardi Family Exhibition Fund, the B. H.
